Physicists may have found a new route toward uniting gravity with quantum mechanics.
For more than a century, physics has had two incredibly successful theories that do not comfortably fit together.
Einstein’s general relativity describes gravity as the bending of spacetime. Quantum field theory describes the other three fundamental forces through fields and particles.
The problem is that gravity has resisted being written in the same mathematical language as the Standard Model.
Now, physicists Mikko Partanen and Jukka Tulkki at Aalto University have proposed a new way to describe gravity using gauge symmetries, the same broad framework behind electromagnetism and the strong and weak nuclear forces.
Instead of starting from the usual curved spacetime symmetry of general relativity, their approach builds gravity from four one-dimensional unitary gauge symmetries.
That may sound abstract, but the aim is simple: make gravity look more like the other forces at the quantum level.
This is not a finished theory of quantum gravity. The researchers still need to prove that the theory works at higher orders and remains mathematically consistent.
But it gives physicists a new path to test.
Gravity may finally be moving closer to the quantum world.
